University Regiments

The Sydney University Regiment, University of New South Wales Regiment, Queensland University Regiment, Adelaide Universities Regiment, University of Tasmania Company, Melbourne University Regiment, Monash University Regiment and Western Australia University Regiment are all part of the Royal Military College - Australia. Some of these regiments also have detachment or companies in universities other than those for which they are named. These regiments provide training for potential officers of the Army Reserve.

Not all university regiments appear to have been issued with their own standards, but all have their own cap badges, which are usually based on the university arms or crests. Images of these university-based Australian Army regimental cap badges can be found at this site.

Melbourne University Regiment

The flag of the University of Melbourne Regiment can be found at the Army Historical Unit site. It is extremely attractive and distinctive, with the Arms of the University in gold centered on a blue horizontal stripe on a black background. I am not certain whether black and blue are the university colors or those of a particular element within the Australian Army, e g, Infantry, Aviation, etc.

Sydney University Regiment

The Sydney University Regiment has a history going back to 1900, and its role seems to have changed several times. This is documented at the regiment's page at the Royal Military College site, where it says: "Since 1960, the SUR has been specifically tasked with the provision of first appointment training for potential officers of the Army Reserve."

The regimental standard of the Sydney University Regiment can be found at the Army Historical Unit site. This flag is a yellow and blue vertically striped bicolor, with the orange half nearest the hoist. In the center of the flag, at the division point between the two halves, is a red octagon on which is placed the regimental cap badge as depicted in the Digger History web site. Beneath the flag image, whose copyright is owned by the Army Historical Unit, are the following lines:

The Regimental Flag of
The Sydney University Regiment
Signed by ---, Major General,
Master General of the Ordnance
Army Headquarters, Canberra, 3 May 1972
Ron Lahav, 4 January 2006

This flag can usually be seen flying outside outside the regiment's building on City Road, Darlington.

University of New South Wales Regiment

The flag of the University of New South Wales Regiment, which can be seen at the Army Historical Unit site is very colorful and well designed. It is a horizontal bicolor, orange and black, with the coat of arms of the University in Black and White, centered and equally divided between the orange and the black. Beneath the image is the following statement:

'Signed by ---, Major General
Chief of Material, Department of Defence (Army Office), Canberra'
